Time Organization
Yesterday while coming back from golfing, we passed a car. My wife noticed the driver was looking through a bunch of coupons. First - that is dangerous. Second - if that's the only time she can look through her coupons, she needs some time management skills. Either way, a driver should not be doing something that distracting while driving. I noticed California has passed a law which will go into effect 1/1/08 that will fine drivers who have a cell phone to their ear. It is just too distracting.
So, what does this driver need to do to manage her time more effectively?- If there is something specific you want to do, set a time to do it (other than while you are driving!) Then when that time comes, do it.
- If the task is very important, get rid of distractions.
- Turn off the cell phone. Set a time later to check for messages.
- Don't check email during the task. You'll be tempted to respond and may not get back to your important task.
- Turn on some motivational music. If you work best with relaxing music, use that. If the pounding-beat gets you going without being distracting, use it. Whatever works!
- Finish your task, then move on to something else. Don't quit until your are done.
- Try to limit your actions to one task at a time. That way you can give all your attention to that task. You will complete it more quickly, you will do it more effectively without distractions, and probably do a better job.
- Don't start several tasks without finishing any. That is discouraging and then we don't want to work on any of them.
- If you have tasks you do every day, set a routine for doing those tasks.
- Do them in the same order, or the same time of the day.
- Set a priority so you get the important tasks done.
- If something is just not going well, give yourself permission to "sleep on it." The next day you should have some new, clear insights on it.
